Men’s Olympic basketball round-up (day 8)

A round-up of day eight and round four at the Olympic Basketball arena.

France squeak by Tunisia

France defeated winless Tunisia 73-69 but it was an unconvincing performance from the French.

Tony Parker led with 22 points with Nicolas Batum contributing with 19.

Tunisia were led by 20 points from Mohamed Hadidane.

Russia recover from poor start to beat Spain

Russia defeated Spain 77-74 after falling 20-2 behind in the first quarter.

Vitaliy Fridzon scored 24 points to lead the Russians as they stormed back to win the second quarter 21-12 and they led at the end of the third 56-53.

In a tense fourth quarter, they hung on and won the game from the foul line to pull clear at the top of Group B.

Pau Gasol, who split his free throws towards the end of the game that could have tied the game with five seconds left led Spain with 20 points.

USA given test but beat Lithuania

USA defeated long-time Olympic foe Lithuania 99-94 in a thrilling game to start the afternoon session.

LeBron James led USA with 20 points as his seven points late into the fourth sealed the game as Lithuania were ahead with five minutes left.

Linas Kleiza led Lithuania with 25, a game-high as they need to beat Tunisia to book their spot in the quarter-finals.

Brazil rout China

Brazil thrashed China 98-59 in a game that was over from the first quarter.

The South Americans eased ahead 25-9 after the first ten minutes and they never looked back from there. With this result, Brazil are now through to the quarter-finals.

Marcus Vieira led Brazil with 14 points. Zhu Fangyu led China with 13, an Olympic high for him.

Great Britain crash out to Boomers

A 70-29 second half gave Australia a 106-75 win over Great Britain in the first evening game.

Great Britain are now out, making their game with China a matter of pride only.

Patty Mills shone with 39 points to lead the Boomers with David Andersen hitting 13. Joel Freeland hit 16 with Dan Clark getting 12 for the Brits.

Argentina beat Nigeria

Argentina defeated Nigeria 93-79 in the final game of day eight.

Luis Scola led all scorers with 22 points with Carlos Defino adding 18.

Nigeria, who had starting point guard Tony Skinn carried out with an ankle injury were led by Ike Diogu’s 16 points and 11 rebounds.
