Women’s Olympic basketball round-up (day 7)

A round-up of day seven and round four at the Basketball Arena.

Croatia secure first win against Angola

Croatia’s hopes of a quarter-final spot are still in tack following a 75-56 victory over Angola.

This defeat means that winless Angola are the first team out of the Olympics, their last game against Czech Republic will be for pride.

Ana Lelas led Croatia with 23 points and six rebounds as her side need to beat Turkey in their last game to have a chance of advancing.

Australia beat Russia in physical encounter

Liz Cambage got some headlines following Australia’s 70-66 success over Russia.

Australia are through to the quarter-finals on a 3-1 record thanks to Cambage’s 17 points and 10 rebounds. She sent the near 10,000 inside the Basketball Arena into raptures with a one-hand slam on the break.

Russia, who were already through suffered their first loss of the Olympics. They were led by Irina Osipova’s 15 points.

Canada beat Brazil and eliminate two at the same time

Canada’s 79-73 win over Brazil sent both the South Americans and the hosts Great Britain out of the Olympics.

Courtnay Philypaitis and Kim Smith led a balanced Canadian attack with 14 points with Tamara Tatham hitting 13.

Brazil, who are relegated to 0-4 were led by Erika Souza’s 22 points and 12 rebounds.

Turkey through after they thrash China

Turkey inflicted a first defeat on China 82-55 as they advanced to the quarter-finals.

A well balanced Turkish attack was led by Nevriye Yilmaz who got 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

China’s only line of attack came from Nan Chen’s 19 points personal. The Asian side have already qualified.

GB heartbroken against France

A Celine Dumerc three with 0.2 seconds remaining gave France an 80-77 overtime victory over Great Britain in the day’s penultimate game.

Jo Leedham led all scorers with 29 points but it was in vain for already eliminated Britain. Edwige Lawson-Wade and Sandrine Gruda both led with 16 for the French who improve to 5-0.

Dumerc also tied the game at the end of regulation as France came back from 67-62 down to force overtime.

USA march on, beat Czechs

USA women defeated Czech Republic 88-61 in the final game of the day.

The Czechs hung around in the first half, but a 22-9 third quarter from the gold medal favourites was enough to secure the win.

Diana Taurasi led USA with 18 points with Michaela Zrustova hitting 15 to lead the Czechs.
