Women’s Olympic round-up (day 5)

A brief round-up of day five of the third round of group games in the women’s event.

France first through the North Greenwich doors

France have book their place into the quarter-finals after they beat Canada 64-60 in game one.

Like she did in the French’s win against Australia, Celine Dumerc hit two crucial free throws to seal the victory putting them at 3-0.

Canada drop to 1-2.

France were led by Emilie Gomes, who hit 16 points with Shona Thorburn providing Canada’s firepower with a game-high 17 points.

China overpower Angola

China became the second team through to the quarter-finals following a 76-52 win over Angola.

While the Asians improve to 3-0, Angola fall to 0-3 and now have to win their remaining two games otherwise they are eliminated.

Nan Chen and Fan Zhang both hit 15 points for the victorious Chinese side. Sonia Guadalupe led Angola with 12 points.

Aussies redeem themselves by beating Brazil

Australia move to 2-1 after they defeated Brazil 67-61.

The duo of Liz Cambage and Lauren Jackson were catalysts in the Opals success, getting 17 and 18 points respectively. Cambage also pulled down 10 rebounds.

Karla Kosta led all scorers in vain for Brazil with 22 points, as they fall to 0-3.

GB fall to 0-3 after loss to Russia

GB are in danger of elimination after they lost 67-61 to Russia.

Evgeniya Belyakova led Russia with 12 points with Natalie Stafford leading GB with 18 points, a game high.

GB now must win their remaining games to stand any chance of qualificiation to the next round.

Czechs grab first win following comfortable win over Croatia

Czech Republic improve to 1-2 following a 89-70 success over Croatia.

This latest loss puts the Croats on 0-3 and in danger of going out of the Olympic tournament. They were held to just 10 points as the Czechs hit 32 points of their own.

Katrina Elhotova led the Czechs in victory with 20 points, with Ilona Burgrova hitting 19.

Croatia’s Sandra Mandir led her side in vain with 20 points.

USA stuff Turkey

USA comfortably advanced to the next round after they defeated Turkey 89-58 in the final game of the day.

Angel McCoughtry led the States with 18 points, ten of those points coming from the free-throw line, she was supported by 16 points from Tina Charles.

After a close first quarter, where Turkey trailed 19-16, they were held to just 10 points as the U.S stepped up the gears defensively to break away and take the win.
