Women’s Olympic basketball round-up (day 3)

Round up of day three at the Olympic Basketball Arena in London.

China surprise Croatia

In the first game of the day, China comfortably defeated Croatia 83-58.

China improve to 2-0 while Croatia now drop to 0-2 in a game where Jelena Ivezic, who led all scorers against the USA was restricted to just seven points off 3/10 shooting.

Captain Nan Chen led all scorers for the Asians with 28 points and she also picked up 10 rebounds. Croatia were supported with 22 points from Sandra Mandir.

After a close first half, China stamped their authority on the game with a 9-0 run to stretch their lead to 60-40 – putting the game beyond the European side’s reach.

Turkey beat Czechs

Czech Republic’s woes continue as they lost 61-57 to Turkey.

Tugba Palazoglu and Nevriye Yilmaz both scored 11 points in victory for the Turks as they improve to 2-0, the Czechs slump to 0-2.

Jana Vesela led all scorers in vain for the Czech Republic with 19 points.

France upset Australia in OT

France and Australia played out the game of the tournament with the Europeans grabbing victory in overtime.

With France up 65-62 and two seconds left on the clock, a desperation hail mary was thrown by Belinda Snell was banked straight in, and as the crowd erupted as soon as the ball dropped, the confidence boost the Aussies got from that was huge.

It didn’t last though, as France re-grouped and won the extra period 9-5, securing the victory.

France were led by Emilie Gomes’ 22 points, supported by 13 points from Celine Dumerc.

Suzy Batkovic led Australia with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Russia at 2-0 after win against Brazil

Russia joined France at 2-0 after defeating Brazil 69-59 in the last game of the afternoon session.

The Eurobasket winners held their South American counterparts to eight points in the second quarter as they won all four periods for victory.

Evgeniya Belyakova led a balanced Russian attack with 14 points with forward Irina Osipova adding 13.

Hosts fall at last hurdle against Canada

Olympic hosts Great Britain led mid-way through the fourth but ultimately fell to Canada 73-65 in day three’s penultimate contest.

Shona Thorburn led all scorers for Canada with 18 points, supported by 11 each for Kim Smith and Courtnay Pilypaitis.

GB were led by Natalie Stafford and Jo Leedham, who each got 15, the latter grabbing four rebounds and two assists.

The Olympic hosts led 61-57 with exactly five minutes left through contributions from Leedham and Julie Page but Canada found a way back and a three from Thorburn turned out to be the dagger at 66-61 with two minutes left and they held on.

GB are now 0-2 with Canada 1-1.

USA crush Angola

In probably the biggest mis-match of the Games, USA thrashed Angola 90-38 in the day three’s final game.

Candace Parker led Team USA with a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds.
