France were victorious over Canada 56-47 in the final game of day two in Ankara as the Olympic Qualifiers begin to take shape.
Canada’s scoring was well spread but with no player stepping up to make the vital contribution, the French took full advantage. Isabelle Yacoubou led the victors with 15 points, adding five rebounds to her statline. The evergreen Sandrine Gruda contributed with 12 points.
No player reached double figures for Canada – Shona Thorburn and forward Tamara Tatham each hit seven points, three players got six points in vain.
The first quarter turned out to be the game changer, as France raced to a 21-11 lead, shocking their opponents in the process.
France maintained their double-digit advantage in the second period despite Canada attempting to claw their way back into contention. France led 35-24 at the half.
Canada would make a fight of it in the remaining two quarters, but the team work and defensive strength of France was too much for Canada who now play the waiting game as France play Mali tomorrow with Canadian hopes of a major upset.
If France win, they are through. Game will be played tomorrow.
