BC Khimki reinforces team for Euroleague

Russian powerhouse BC Khimki have trailed only to Euroleague finalists CSKA Moscow this season to finish second in the Russian Beko PBL and clinch themselves a place in the 2012-13 Euroleague regular season.

During last month the team made several big signings, it would seem for the ensuing Euroleague season. The first new addition was 27 year old Paul Davis. Ex-NBA, Davis played for Cajasol in the ACB the past two seasons and has signed for Khimki on a two-year deal.

The addition of the 211cm American center will give the Russian team added inside presence. Last season Davis averaged 14.6 points, 7.4 rebounds and 0.4 blocks in 21.8 minutes per contest.

During May Khimki also picked up another big-man in James Augustine. The American power forward, like Davis, enjoyed a brief stint in the NBA and spent two seasons with the Orlando Magic.

During last season with the Murcia of the ACB, Augustine averaged 12.4 points, 8.2 rebounds, just over a steal and 0.8 blocks. His two-year addition will add extra size to Khimki’s line-up and make them a formidable force on the boards.

Another two-year addition to BC Khimki is swingman K.C. Rivers. He will join from another Russian team Lokomotiv-Kuban, where he spent last season helping his team reach the Eurocup quarter-final.

During the regular season Rivers averaged 11.2 points, 1.2 steals and grabbed 4.3 rebounds with 1 assist per game. The addition of the energising 23 year old will give Khimiki some additional outside firepower as well as a surprising amount of experience.

The final major signing for BC Khimki – in the month of May – was Finnish point-guard Petteri Koponen. He was signed to a three-year deal out of Virtus Bologna where he has spent the past four years.

For his previous club Koponen covered all stat categories with 14.3 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists and a steal per game. Khimki have added a solid and reliable point guard to their already impressive backcourt and whether the Finnish national starts or comes of the bench he will no doubt add great depth to the squad.

The four signings of May have seen Khimki cover all positions and may not be the last before the upcoming Euroleague season. During the Russian league and play-offs Khimiki have repeatedly fallen short to CSKA, it remains to be seen if their new additions will challenge Moscow’s dominance on the European stage.
