GB women’s squad narrowed down

Lauren Thomas Johnson and Steph Gandy will not feature in the Great Britain women’s national team for their pre-Olympic trips to Turkey and Czech Republic.

They have been left out of coach Tom Maher’s 12-women roster that will play three games in Turkey and two games in the Czech Republic.

An official, close to the Great Britain set-up has said that they are definitely not out of the Olympic squad, but for the two players involved, they now face an uphill battle to play at the Olympics in London.

For Thomas-Johnson, this news comes as a surprise as she has been part of the GB squad and featured at Eurobasket Women last year. It’s a different story though for Gandy who hasn’t seen a lot of court time in the early stages of GB’s warm-ups. She has been up against one of the team’s leading scorers in Natalie Stafford for the only naturalised spot.

Great Britain are due to submit their final roster to the British Olympic Association at the end of the month.
