Evan Turner, headed to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the four-team trade, could become a free agent soon, as there would be other suitors for him.
The Timberwolves are expected to buyout the former Atlanta Hawk if his contract is not used in another deal, according to Sean Deveney of Heavy.com.
In the case that Turner is bought out, his former team, the Boston Celtics, could be interested in bringing him back.
He put up solid numbers with the Celtics, averaging 10.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game in two seasons.
The Celtics have reportedly been looking to bolster their bench for the playoff push.
The only issue with the Celtics is that they don’t have an open roster spot, but that could change by the trade deadline.
Another team expected to have interest in Turner is the Miami Heat, who do have an open roster spot, according to Deveney.
The Heat have been seeking an upgrade to their depth like the Celtics.
If they can’t make a deal at the trade deadline, they could look to the buyout market, as Turner, who has playoff experience, would be a potential option.
On the other hand, Turner could still suit up for the Timberwolves, as there have been no decisions made on his future with the team.
“We’re working through all the options with G.R. (Timberwolves president of basketball operations Gersson Rosas) right now,” Turner’s agent Kevin Bradbury said. “They have been professional and upfront with everything. Evan is a 10-year vet who has a lot of basketball left in him and understands this is a business. We’re open to working with (Rosas) to help everyone accomplish their goals.”
The Timberwolves could take a few weeks to make a decision regarding a possible buyout, as the deadline to waive Turner and allow him to retain his playoff eligibility is March 1.
