Barcelona to drop A License, asks for less teams in the ACB

Barcelona have proposed that the Spanish teams drop their Euroleague A-Licenses. In exchange they are asking that the ACB will feature 14 teams instead of 18.

All this comes in the frame of the Euroleague’s decision to change the format of the competition. From next year on, the Top 16 round will be divided to two groups of eight teams that will play each other home and away, pushing the total number of games in the Top 16 to 14, rather than 6 that it is now.

Moreover the Euroleague announced that games will be played on Thursdays and Fridays, leaving little time between league and Euroleague games.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona in turn proposed that the ACB should have no more than 14 teams in order to have a more relaxed schedule and facilitate Euroleague participation. In exchange the Catalan club proposed that Spanish teams dropped their A-Licenses and that the four top teams in the final standings will play in the Euroleague each season.

The proposition didn’t come well in the ranks of Real Madrid, Caja Laboral and Unicaja Malaga, the other A-License holders of the Spanish league. It also finds opposition from the smaller clubs that feel endangered by such a change.
