Barcelona destroy Alicante in Copa del Rey

Barcelona easily overcame Lucentum Alicante in the second of Thursday’s Copa del Rey quarter finals, by a score of 75-54.

The game was over as a contest shortly after half time, after a tight first quarter that Barcelona shaded 17-13, a 24-12 second period put them in control, and the second half was mostly a procession. Erazem Lorbek and Xavi Rabaseda led the victors with 17 and 16 points respectively. Pedro Llompart scored 14 for Alicante, but he was the only one in double figures. Kaloyan Ivanov finished with a disappointing 9.

Barcelona weren’t just more talented than their opponents, they dominated them physically, Fran Vazquez in particular was able to do whatever he pleased inside. It wasn’t just dunks and blocks from the NBA lottery pick, he dished out 4 first half assists and played with the kind of bounce and channeled aggression that puts him at his most dangerous.

Alicante couldn’t establish anything inside and the Barcelona offense encountered minimal resistance as it picked apart the Alicante defense. Whether it was Lorbek or Xavi Rabaseda in the corner, or Mickael creating around the free throw line, there was always a good shot available.

Rabaseda dosen’t usually get much of a chance to shine in this deep Barcelona lineup, but he scored 16 tonight, including three triples in the first half, as Navarro and Vazquez worked the pick and roll to perfection. Vazquez himself had one huge dunk and an even more impressive first half block on Lamont Barnes that was insulting in its nonchalance. Barcelona finished with 8 blocks in total, equalling a Copa del Rey record.

In the way of second half highlights, Victor Sada narrowly missed what would have been an incredible throwdown from a Navarro lob. As the third quarter wound to a close, Rabaseda caught the ball in the corner, but instead of putting up another three, he dashed baseline and threw down hard, two handed over Barnes. Alicante began the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run, but that only cut the lead to 18 points. Alicante won the final period 19-13 and played hard til the end, but the 19 point margin of victory in the end was entirely representative.
