Becirovic to soothe Iran’s Asian hangover.

Ex-Slovenia coach Memi Becirovic has become the new head coach of the Iran national team.

Becirovic, who guided Slovenia to the quarter-finals of the 2010 world championships in Turkey, takes over from Veselin Matic, who parted ways with Iran shortly after the Asiabasket tournament, after they were knocked out in the last eight by Jordan.

Previously, Iran had won the Asian crown in 2007 and 2009, but failed to qualify for the London 2012 Olympics due to their performance in China.

“I accepted the offer of Iran because I found it very interesting,” Becirovic said.

“Asian basketball is being developed with big steps, and Iran has good conditions for training.”

Becirovic’s Slovenia side faced Iran in Istanbul at the world championships with the Europeans winning 65-60.

He is expected to leave for Iran in April.
