Page, Van Oostrum honoured by British Basketball

Great Britain stars Julie Page and Devon van Oostrum have both been honoured by British Basketball with end-of-year awards.

Page, who plays for Torun in Poland scooped the British Basketball Player of the Year award, beating Luol Deng, Chantelle Handy and Joel Freeland to the award. The Manchester-born forward led Great Britain to their first ever Eurobasket Women appearance, in which they reached the second round.

Page averaged 10 points and 7.5 rebounds at Eurobasket Women earlier this year in Poland.

“Just to be considered alongside so many talented and accomplished players is extremely humbling, but to actually win the award is a tremendous privilege,” she said.

Devon van Oostrum won the Emerging Athlete award for 2011. He becomes the first recipient of this award.

Van Oostrum has had a breakthrough year, thanks to his performances with the under-20s, averaging 13 points at the U20 Euros, which then carried on to the senior side. The youngster made his mark during the pre-Eurobasket games, especially at the Olympic Test Event in London.

Van Oostrum then made three appearances at Eurobasket in Lithuania, playing 23 minutes against eventual gold-medallists, Spain in Panevezys.

“I am so happy to be awarded this title, especially since it was my first official outing with the GB senior men’s side,” van Oostrum commented.
