Ukraine and Hungary host the 2015 EuroBaskets

FIBA Europe have awarded Eurobasket 2015 to Ukraine and has also given the women’s tournament to Hungary.

The board met today in Munich to decide who would host the two events in 2015. Ukraine was an automatic choice for the men’s event, following the withdrawal of joint bidders, France/Germany and Italy/Croatia.

Hungary bested Belarus for the right to host the women’s tournament with an aim to invest in the sport with basketball being targeted.

The dates for Eurobasket in Ukraine haven’t yet been finalised, but the venues have been picked. Kharkiv, Donetsk, Dnepropetrovsk and Kyiv will host the group stages, with the second round being staged in Odressa, Lviv and again Kyiv.

Kyiv will also host the final round.

“This decision, it made me feel like in 1988 in Seoul when we won the Olympic gold, when you don’t feel it until it’s over, and I had that same feeling today,” Ukrainian Basketball Federation President Oleksandr Volkov stated.

“We had great support from all our government and the people you saw here today, we are a united group of people who decided that after football we can also do the same for basketball.”

Current Ukraine coach Mike Fratello (far right in the picture) was in attendence in Munich.

Hungary won the right to host Eurobasket Women 2015 thanks to a two-day vote with Belarus.

This will be the fourth time that Hungary has hosted this event and Hungary’s sports minister Attila Czene believes the correct choice was made.

“I think it is a good choice,” she said. “We will see our gorgeous women play on their home court.”

FIBA Europe President Olafur Rafnsson said: “First of all congratulations to Hungary and the minister, but I would also like to thank our friends from Belarusfor their presentation and enthusiasm.”

Slovenia will host Eurobasket 2013 with France hosting Eurobasket Women 2013.
