Partizan beat Maccabi, Euroleague round-up

Partizan ended Maccabi Electra Tel-Aviv’s five game winning streak with a 74-71 win in Belgrade.

Milan Macvan, on loan from Maccabi was in sublime form as he poured in 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds to guide Partizan to 4-3 in Group C.

Maccabi, who are virtually through themselves slip to 5-2, but need one more win to book their spot into the next round. Devin Smith scored 12 in vain for the Israeli giants.

After holding a nine-point lead with five minutes to go in the fourth, Partizan were gripping to a slight 65-61 lead with a minute remaining, when up stepped Macvan to bury a triple to send the passionate Belgrade fans into a frenzy and make the game safe.

Jordan Farmar, playing in his last game due to the end of the NBA lockout, hit a three-pointer with seconds left for the visitors, but it was too late.

This was also the last game for Partizan’s Nikola Pekovic, as he returns to the Minnesota Timberwolves due to the NBA lockout. The Montenegrin was pleased with the state of the team upon leaving.

“I’ve really enjoyed playing for Partizan in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague, and I am leaving the club in good condition,” Pekovic said.

“Maybe I’ll be back one day, who knows.”

Real Madrid booked their spot in the Top 16 with a 72-65 victory over Emporio Armani Milano.

Sergio Rodriguez led Real with 19 points, helped by Nikola Mirotic’s 11 point, 10 rebound double-double.

Milano, in danger of an early exit from the Euroleague were led by 13 points from Danilo Gallinari. They slip to 2-5.

Montepaschi Siena also advanced to the Top 16 with a 63-57 road win over Union Olimpija in Slovenia.

It’s another defeat for the Slovenian side, who are now out of the Euroleague.

Elsewhere, Regal FC Barcelona march on, as they eased to a 76-45 win in Poland over Asseco Prokom.

The visitors broke the game open in the third quarter, holding Asseco Prokom to just four points in ten minutes, giving Barca enough breathing space to remain undefeated at 7-0. Asseco Prokom have long been eliminated, as their record drags to 0-7.

There were also wins for Unics Kazan, as they triumphed against Galatasaray 72-61 led by 17 points from Terrell Lyday. Fenerbahce beat Olympiacos 86-70 and Bennet Cantu did their chances of progressing to the Top 16 no harm, as they defeated Caja Laboral 71-68.
