Brilliant Ayón forces Cajasol to first home loss

Cajasol failed to continue its winning streak at home against Fuenlabrada, which won 97-99 after overtime thanks to an unstoppable Gustavo Ayón, who scored 34 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

It was a strange game played in Seville, because the local team usually success when they display a high defensive level. They control the rebound in both sides of the court, and this way they win the game in the end. But Fuenlabrada came with a well learned lesson: it was them who were going to control all those things. So they took the lead of the game for almost 36 minutes, and despite losing it a couple of minutes in the final quarter, they managed to win the game in the end.

The local team played horrible on defense. A simple play like a pick’n’roll by Colom and Ayón proved to be impossible to defend. At least, on the offensive side, Paul Davis scored enough shoots to finish the first half only 9 points down, a total success considering the way they had played. Ayón scored up to 15 points in the second quarter, just to mention…

In the second half, game continued to be pretty much the same. Davis was the best player for the local team, but also the biggest problem with his bad defense on Ayón (great battle between both of them). In the last quarter, everything changed when Joan Plaza, local coach, displayed a zonal defense that made Fuenlabra to get really nervous, up to the point that Cajasol Banca Cívica took the lead of the game by a couple a points. But in the final moment, shoots didn’t go in, and the game finished as a tie.

The overtime was horrible. Paul Davis was fouled out and the local team lost his offensice reference. Anyway, both team combined to score only 5 points in 5 minutes, and Fuenlabrada scored the most, so they won the game, getting a well deserved victory after 45 minutes of a hard a thrilling match.
