Riders sign GB captain Drew Sullivan

It’s official – The Leicester Riders have signed Great Britain Captain and arguably the best player in the BBL, Andrew ‘Drew’ Sullivan.

His signing was orchestrated by another recent Paternostro signing and Sullivan’s good friend, Flinder Boyd:

“Flinder and Drew are good friends and spoke. Flinder let him know that this is a nice place to play. Most people who have played here in the past would tell you that this is a good place to play.” explained Paternostro.

Sullivan’s arrival at the Riders takes the tally of GB Internationals at the club up to three, alongside Flinder Boyd and Jamell Anderson. And for Sullivan, the presence of Great Britain players within the British Basketball League is vital:

“It’s hugely important to stay in the BBL leading up to the Olympics. Right now we have four GB players in the league which is important.” the GB Captain said.

“Obviously there’s the lure of contracts from Europe but hopefully, something can be done where the week to week becomes a permanent thing.”

That desire to stay in the league is in complete harmony with his aims and goals for his time at the Riders, suggesting that not only is he delighted to remain in the BBL and join the Leicester Riders but that his intention is to stay the course:

“” I’m going to be playing and competing as if I were playing for a whole year. In the short term, I’m looking to win games. I’ve got a record in the BBL for winning silverware which I don’t want coming to an end. That is my goal and hopefully that will be the team goal as well.”

The Riders have made wholesale changes since last season when they finished 8th in the league, crippled by injuries. This year though, with the trio of GB players headed by Sullivan, big things will be expected of them.
