Leicester Riders re-sign Frank Holmes

Five games, 25.2 minutes per game, 15.2 points and 8 rebounds per contest.

Those were the statistics that convinced the Leicester Riders to re-sign the 6’9 forward who was signed as a temporary replacement for injured captain, Lataryl Williams, toward the end of last season after Williams suffered a horrifying knee injury.

In a day and age where reputations take years to build, something about the professional way Frank Holmes approached his short stint with the Riders was enough to show Paternostro that Holmes needed to be one of the first players to be re-signed when the off-season started:

“When the season ended and we sat down with him, he expressed a desire to come back. He told us that he really enjoyed his time here and that he liked the way things were done.” said Coach P, before continuing “Last season, Frank joined us late in the year and as soon as he got here, he fit in with the guys on and off the court. He came into a difficult situation toward the end of the season and he didn’t have many opportunities to train. But he was still effective and that was down to his hard work.”

For anyone keeping a list at home of the qualities Frank possesses, you can tick off the following:

  • Good reputation
  • Loyal
  • Hard working
  • Those are three intangibles that, when you add them to his sizeable frame and good touch around the rim, make him a fantastic off-season acquisition. And as with fellow Riders returnee, Tom Sherlock, the opportunity to train for a full pre-season will provide Holmes with the perfect platform on which to build a successful season.

“With the energy that Frank brings on the court we expect him to be a very effective interior player in this league and with a full pre-season, he can only improve from last year.” predicted Paternostro.

Last season, Holmes avoided the spotlight due to the circumstances in which he joined the Riders but with his early off-season signing committing him to the club for the new season ahead, the focus is now firmly going to be on the forward.

How he responds to the inevitable pressure of playing for the Riders will be the main question asked of him. But as he showed last year, he will let his game do all the talking.
