Thunder join EBL

The Board of Directors of Worthing Thunder today announced that the Club have applied to play in England Basketball League (EBL) Division One next season.

The decision follows a difficult 12 months for the club off the playing court.

The Club have enjoyed some fantastic times in the BBL during the last three seasons from the very first win away at Cheshire Jets to the nail biting last minute win against the same team last week. However, in the current financial climate, the club have not been able to attract sufficient income to sustain their place in the BBL.

Club Chairman Frank Gainsbury said “We are extremely grateful for the level of support and encouragement we have had from the BBL during our time in the League and particularly during our difficulties this season. We leave the BBL on good terms, with a solid reputation as a well organised and friendly Club, and our aim is to one day be in a position to rejoin the BBL again”

Gainsbury added “I would also like to go on record to thank everybody connected to the Club during the last few seasons for their fantastic help and support. This has been a extremely difficult decision but given the circumstances we are confident that this move will be in the best long term interests of the organisation”.

BBL Chief Operating Officer Andy Webb said “We are sorry to see Thunder leave our ranks but they go with our best wishes and we hope to welcome them back in the future”.

Thunder joined the BBL for the start of the 2008/09 season following a sustained successful spell in EBL Division One. They enjoyed their most successful season in the BBL in 2009/10, reaching the end of season playoffs whilst in the same season also recording regular season wins over the Newcastle Eagles and the Sheffield Sharks.
