Kazys Maksvytis offered Lithuania job

Following resignation of Dainius Adomaitis, Lithuania national team is in need of a new coach. Lithuanian Basketball Federation (LKF) has already found a candidate and offered him a job.

Kazys Maksvytis, currently in charge of BC Parma (Russia), is the front-runner for the hot seat. The 42-year-old coach admitted he has an offer from LKF and will seriously consider it.

Prior to getting a job in Russia, Maksvytis coached in his native Lithuania. He managed to beat the odds and took his teams to LKL finals twice – Neptunas (2014) and Lietkabelis (2017).

For Maksvytis it would be the first time working with the senior national team. So far he has only coached the youth teams. He won the gold medal in the European U16 (2008), U18 (2010) and the U20 (2012) championships as well as the World U19 (2011).

The youth teams included current national team players Jonas Valanciunas, Edgaras Ulanovas and Arnas Butkevicius.

After a disappointing 9th place finish in FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019, Lithuania will try to qualify for the 7th straight Olympics via Olympic Qualifying Tournament. LKF has already expressed the interest in hosting the event.

The country’s new coach will have a tough task of getting results quickly and qualifying for Tokyo Olympics.
