A record breaking 2019 FIBA World Cup

Several individual and team records were matched and broken at the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China.

Here are the team records of note:

Spain – Oldest team to win the World Cup

Spain was the oldest team to win a World Cup since Yugoslavia in 1978. Spain had an average age of 30 years and three months. Eight of their 12 players were at least 30, with star center Marc Gasol being the oldest at 34.

Serbia – Highest field goal percentage

Serbia shot 53.5 percent from the field, with a tournament high of 75 percent against the Philippines. They had the highest point differential of any team in the tournament, with a margin of +155 and also the highest point differential per game of +19.4. Serbia not only outscored their opponents by quite a bit, but they were efficient in doing so.

Australia – Best-ever finish

Depite losing their last two games of the tournament, Australia finished in the top four (4th place) for the first time, their best result at a FIBA World Cup. Their total of six wins was also their highest ever.

USA – Single game rebound record

Team USA grabbed 58 rebounds against Japan, matching their highest rebound total from a game in 1994 against Greece. Team USA also averaged 43 rebounds per game, the highest of any team in the tournament. While Team USA put up impressive rebound numbers, they did not put up their usual scoring numbers. This was the first World Cup since 1990 where Team USA did not lead the tournament in scoring.

Canada – Most three-pointers in a game, most assists in a game

Despite their disappointing overall finish (21st place), Canada did manage to break a couple records. They set the single game three-point record, knocking down 24 against Jordan. It was the first time a team made more than 20 three-pointers in a game. Canada also tied the single game assist record with 37 in the same game against Jordan. Serbia also had 37 assists earlier in the tournament in a game against the Philippines.

Ricky Rubio – All-time assists leader

Rubio was named the MVP of the World Cup and now has the most total assists in World Cup history with 130, as he passed Argentina’s Pablo Prigioni.

Luis Scola – Moves up all-time scoring list

39-year-old Scola continued to defy father time, averaging 17.9 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, helping Argentina to a second place finish. Scola was able to move into second place on the all-time scoring list in the process. Scola has scored 716 points in 41 career World Cup games, only trailing Brazil’s Oscar Schmidt who scored an astounding 906 points in 34 games.

Facundo Campazzo & Ricky Rubio – Recording a 15, 10, 5 and 3 game

Campazzo and Rubio joined Croatia’s Toni Kukoc as the only players in World Cup history to record 15+ points, 10+ assists, 5+ rebounds and 3+ steals in a single game. Campazzo had 18 points, 12 assists, 6 rebounds and 3 steals against Serbia, while Rubio had 19 points, 12 assists, 7 rebounds and 4 steals against Australia.

Bogdan Bogdanovic – Ties three-point record

Bogdanovic knocked down a total of 35 three-pointers in the tournament, tying the most ever at a World Cup. Puerto Rico’s Larry Ayuso also made 35 in 2002. Bogdanovic was named to the tournament All-Star team, averaging 22.9 points per game, trailing only Korea’s Ra Guna.

Ra Guna – Historic double-doubles

Korea finished 26th and recorded only one win at the World Cup, but they had a star in Ra Guna. Guna became the first player to register 15+ points and 10+ rebounds in four consecutive games at a single World Cup since 1994. He is also the only player to register a double-double in every game of a World Cup. Guna led the tournament in points (23.0) and rebounds (12.8) per game.

Salah Mejri – Most blocks in a game

Mejri led the tournament in blocks per game with 3.2 for Tunisia. In a game against Angola, he recorded an impressive eight blocks to match Yao Ming’s single game World Cup record.

Tomas Satoransky & Dennis Schroder – Recording a 20 point 10 assist game

Satoransky and Schroder joined Puerto Rico’s Carlos Arroyo as the only players to put up 20+ points and 10+ assists in a single game. Satoransky did it against Poland, while Schroder did it against Senegal. Satoransky finished with 68 assists in the tournament, the most for a player in the World Cup since 1994.
