Sam Nduku new basketball federation president in Cameroon

Samuel NdukuAfter a turbulent summer, which included a lot of monetary problems that resulted in a difficult preparation for the Olympic Qualifiers with cancelled test games, inadequate housing and a last second appearance at the qualifiers itself, the basketball federation of Cameroon (Fecabasket) now may face a better future with newly elected president Samuel Nduku.

Nduku succeeded in the elections over recent president Jean Chrysogone Noah, Barnabas Enanga (former Fecaba-president) and Pierre Eyock (former basketball player), which were hardly fought as there has been false accusations been brought up by one of his rivals to harm Nduku’s chances of election.

Current national team-head coach Lazare Adingono looks into a positive future for Cameroon’s national team coupled with the election of Nduku who ran successfully local basketball team Phoenix de Douala for many years.

“Our climb will be steep. Nduku and his new administration may not get there in one year, but the basketball family should know one thing – I have never been more hopeful than I am with this new leadership that we will get there”, the New York-based coach told us recently.

He further added:  “What began about two years ago for those who made the trip to Angola in the depths of a steamy summer must not end now. This victory alone is not the change we seek – it is only the chance for us to make that change that would make our young men and women future better. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were. This is our time – to put our sport (basketball) back to work and open doors of opportunity for our young man and women; to restore prosperity and promote the sport we all love worldwide”, the current assistant coach of Canisius emphatically told about the work that lays ahead for supporters of basketball in Cameroon.

We remember: Cameroon’s national team surprisingly won the silver medal behind Angola in the 2007 African Championships and earned the respect of the basketball world by loosing closely to Croatia and Puerto Rico in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Athens in the summer of 2008.

Hopefully, Cameroon can repeat their success in the next African Championships to display their deep pool of talented players at the next World Championships in Turkey in 2010.
