Following the end of the first round in Groups A, B, C and D of the Basketball World Cup, the first eight teams that reached the Round of 16 have been decided.
Group A
Poland had already qualified for the second round since Monday (02/09), yet they remained undefeated (3-0) and finished on top, thanks to their victory over Cote d’Ivoire (63-80).
At the same time, Venezuela rallied past China in a do-or-die game and finished second (72-59), advancing to the Round of 16 and eliminating the hosts.
China and Cote d’Ivoire will play in the Classification games (17-32).
Group B
Argentina beat Russia in the battle of the top spot (61-69) and finished the first round undefeated (3-0). For their part, the Russians claimed the second place.
In the other match, Nigeria crushed Korea (66-108), with both teams set for the classification games (17-32).
Group C
Spain overpowered Iran (73-65), thanks to an 8-0 run in the final minutes of the game, and earned its third straight win in the tournament (3-0).
Puerto Rico made another come-back and survived Tunisia (67-64) to clinch its spot in the second round (2-1).
Tunisia and Iran will compete in the classification games (17-32).
Group D
Serbia dominated Italy (77-92) and advanced to the second round without losing a game (3-0). At the same time, the Italians finished second and will have to beat Spain in the second round in order to retain their chances to reach the quarterfinals.
Angola edged the Philippines in overtime (87-84), with the two teams set to play in the classification matches (17-32).
Based on the results, the two groups that have been created in the Round of 16 are as follows:
Group J: Serbia, Spain, Italy, Puerto Rico
Group I: Argentina, Poland, Russia, Venezuela
