2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup: Day 2 Roundup

The second day of the 2019 Basketball World Cup saw France survive Germany in a late thriller in a classic European derby (78-74).

Group E

Team USA took over from the second quarter onwards and dominated the Czech Republic (67-88). Donovan Mitchell had 16 points for the winners, whereas Tomas Satoransky scored 17 points for the losing squad.

Turkey played excellent on both ends and started its Basketball World Cup campaing with a comfortable win over Japan (86-67). Ersan Ilyasova led the way for the winners, with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

On Tuesday (03/09), Turkey will face Team USA and Japan will play against the Czech Republic.

Group F

Playing excellent defence in the first half and conceding just 16 points (42-16), Greece decimated Montenegro in its opening game in the tournament (85-60). Giorgos Printezis had a game-high 16 points for the winners.

Thanks to a 12-28 run in the third quarter, Brazil earned a double-digit lead (62-78) and cruised to the victory over New Zealand (94-102). Leandro Barbosa was the top scorer of the winners, with a game-high 22 points.

Brazil will face Greece and New Zealand will battle Montenegro in the second day of Group F on Tuesday (03/09).

Group G

In a late thriller in Shenzhen, which was decided in the final seconds, France endured the come-back of Germany and edged its opponents (78-74).

Germany came back twice from a double-digit deficit (14-0, 21-17, 36-20, 71-68), but Evan Fournier and Rudy Gobert stood tall in the final seconds and help the French seal the deal.

Fournier finished the game with 26 points for the winners, whereas Johannes Voigtmann had 25 for the losing squad.

In a hard-fought battle that was decided in the final seconds, the Dominican Republic edged Jordan and claimed its first win in the group (80-76).

With the Dominican Republic in front by three (79-76), Jordan Al-Dasuqi missed the game-tying three-pointer and Luis Montero sealed the deal for the winners from the free-throw line.

Victor Liz had a team-high 15 points for the winners, whereas Ahmad Al Dwairi posted a monstrous double-double for the losing squad (34 points, 10 rebounds).

The Dominican Republic will battle Germany on Tuesday (03/09), while Jordan will face France.

Group H

Lithuania and Australia made a great start in the opening day of the group, defeating Senegal and Canada, respectively.

Lithuania made an extraordinary performance and crushed Senegal (47-101), with Domantas Sabonis and Jonas Valanciunas being the top scorers (13 points apiece, five more players in double figures).

For their part, the Australians endured the come-back of the Canadians and rallied past their opponents (92-108), with Matthew Dellavedova having 24 points (6/10 three-pointers).
