Barbosa-led Brazil overpowered New Zealand in Basketball World Cup opener

In the opening match of Group F, Brazil defeated New Zealand (94-102), with Leandro Barbosa leading the way with a game-high 22 points.

Aside from the legendary Brazilian guard/forward, Rafa Luz and Alex Garcia added 15 and 14 points, respectively, for the winners.

On the other hand, five players scored in double figures for the losing squad, with Corey Webster having a team-high 19 points.

New Zealand remained competitive until halftime (20-21, 50-50), yet the Brazilians took over after that. They went on a 12-28 run in the third quarter to earn a 16-point lead (62-78). New Zealand never recovered after that and were defeated.

On Tuesday (03/09), Brazil will clash with Greece, while New Zealand will battle Montenegro.
