The president of Panathinaikos, Manos Papadopoulos, talked about Vassilis Spanoulis and his departure from the “Greens” in 2010.

Here is what the experienced executive said in an interview with the Greek website SDNA.gr:

On Vassilis Spanoulis leaving the team in 2010 and whether this was a mistake: “For me, the mistake was with two players. One of them was [Ramunas] Siskauskas.

I believe that if he had stayed with Panathinaikos, we would have won three more EuroLeague titles in a row. The other one is clearly with Spanoulis, who joined Olympiacos.

If he hadn’t signed with Olympiacos, then Olympiacos wouldn’t have won any EuroLeague title. And I’m sure about this, even if they had put 100 million a year.

It was a mistake that he (Spanoulis) left. You can’t know where the mistake is with the handling and where it is not. I can’t say more about this transfer. Perhaps I’ll be able to speak more when Spanoulis will have retired from basketball.”
