Spain wins gold in U16 Eurobasket

ImageThe U16 European Championship 2009 took place in Kaunas, Lithuania, with Spain beating hosts Lithuania in the final game, repeating their triumph of three years ago in 2006.

Jaime Fernandez led the winning team with 20 points, with Alejandro Suarez adding 11 points and Daniel Diaz another 9. Mantas Mockevicius had 14 points for Lithuania, Tauras Jogela 12 and Tomas Lekunas 11. The final score was 70-64 for Spain.

The bronze medal went to Serbia as they beat Poland in the 3rd place game 75-69 behind 20 points and 10 rebounds of Aleksandar Cvetkovic.

MVP honours went to Tauras Jogela of Lithuania who averaged 15.6 points, 8.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists. The other four members of the All-Tournament team were Nenad Miljenovic (Serbia), Jaime Fernandez (Spain), Gleb Goldyrev (Russia) and Przemyslaw Karnowski (Poland).
