Sharks sponsorship deal to help promote child fitness

Sheffield SharksB. Braun Medical Ltd has been unveiled as the main sponsor of the Sheffield Sharks for the 2010-11 season at a special ceremony at their Thorncliffe Park headquarters.

The partnership between the leading healthcare company and the Sharks will support the basketball team’s award-winning community projects, which aims to get local youngsters into sport.

‘Bounce Back 2 Health’ uses basketball stars and the health care company’s staff to deliver targeted messages around health care issues such as obesity, healthy eating, exercise and smoking.

The programme was launched in 2008 after a successful pilot scheme involving 11 primary schools in the South East Sheffield Primary Care Trust area. The team has this year worked with more than 1,000 school children in South Yorkshire.

Hans Hux, Group Chief Executive of B. Braun in the UK, which is based at ThorncliffePark, said: “We are delighted to continue our successful partnership into its third year with Sheffield Sharks. We are committed, under our B. Braun for Children scheme, to help support such inspiring community projects.

“By working with the Sharks on their ‘Bounce Back 2 Health’ scheme, we can encourage hundreds of local children to take up sport and exercise in South Yorkshire, as well as educating them on the benefits of living an active and well life.”

SteveShore, new chairman of Sharks Basketball heralded the deal as a great relationship between business and sport.

Steve said: “We have engaged with 22 schools encouraging them to adopt a healthy lifestyle through basketball and sport.  We have had some fantastic results and great feedback and we are going to expand the scheme even further this year.

“You only have to see on the TV and the newspapers to see that our society is in difficulty because of the increasing number of obese young people. If we can encourage on our part to get children in Sheffield thinking about diet, sport and health then it is very much on message with what ourselves and B. Braun are trying in partnership to achieve.”

The launch also featured Sharks player/head coach Atiba Lyons, former chairman Yuri Matischen and a host of Sharks players and B. Braun delegates.

The Sharks start their season on Friday September 17 at home to Glasgow Rocks in the BBL Trophy at English Institute of Sport (EIS).
