Great Britain stars leave for Spain

Flinder BoydSpain’s LEB Oro now boasts two Great Britain internationals who left the British Basketball League in a three week span. A bitter blow to the second placed Newcastle Eagles, who lost Flinder Boyd to Faymesa Palencia and the third placed Glasgow Rocks, who gave Randell Hanke up to Tenerife.

Boyd, who starred for Great Britain in Poland last summer at EuroBasket left Newcastle without even playing a single game. But Eagles bounced straight back, snapping up Great Britain Captain, Andrew Sullivan for the rest of the season, after Sullivan left Cypriot club, Pizza Express Primetel Apollon, due to personal reasons.

Before joining the Great Britain line-up, Boyd played for Rob Paternostro’s Leicester Riders in the British Basketball League and was without a club before the original move to Newcastle.

Randell Hanke, a New York born rookie, coming out of Providence won five caps for Chris Finch’s Great Britain side, but missed out on being in the final squad for EuroBasket. Hanke joined Sterling Davis’ Glasgow Rocks team, having had unsuccessful trials overseas and averaged 8.2 points and 3.7 rebounds in his three week spell North of the Border.

“I wanted to go there because my goal is to test myself at the highest level in Europe and this is a step closer,” Hanke said.

“I had a one-week trial with Burgos earlier this season but this is a chance for me to have a proper chunk of time there. But it will be a challenge and I have to step up.”
