This Sunday evening sees the second leg of the Semi Final of the BBL Cup competition take place at the Northgate Arena, as the Cheshire Jets look to save their chances of appearing the BBL Cup Final in January by beating the Marshall MK Lions, who won their home leg of the game 88-84 last Friday evening.
The winner, based on the score across the two games, will face either the Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders, or the Sheffield Sharks, depending on the outcome of the exciting double-header taking place next weekend, which sees both legs of their Semi Final played back-to-back.
Although it was not all joy for the Lions last weekend, who went down 93-82 to the Guildford Heat away last Saturday; the Jets experienced double agony, as after losing the Semi Final to the Lions, they were defeated 89-108 by a Ryan Patton-led Sheffield Sharks side. The American point guard shot 10/14 from behind the arc, and knocked down all of his free throws and field goals, to finish with 44 points in the contest.
Despite the results last weekend, Jets Head Coach Paul Smith said that he was proud of his players' effort. He explained: 'Both games were tough and the wrong results last weekend, but I was proud of our players. They played with spirit against two good teams, with two key players out' he added: 'We are improving all the time, and Sunday will be a very tough game. A place in the final is at stake. The two teams are closely matched, and these are great games for everyone to be involved in. The coaches, players and fans should all be up for this.'
Having played against the Lions last weekend, Smith said that stopping Yorick Williams is the key for his side come Sunday evening: 'Their main threat, without a doubt, is Yorick Williams – he always plays well at the Northgate.' he added.
Fans must also remember that a key BBL Championship clash between the Glasgow Rocks and the visiting Essex Pirates takes place on Sunday. The sides have never met before in BBL history, as the Pirates are new to the league this year, and Rocks player-coach Sterling Davis says he is thoroughly looking forward to what will be a tough test for his side: 'I think it will be as tough as any other game throughout the course of the season' he said: 'Every game is a tough one, but they have a lot to prove, being that they are new to the league.'
