Scottish star Murray to return for Rocks

Gareth MurrayThe Glasgow Rocks have secured the return of another familiar face with the signing of Scotland Internationalist, Gareth Murray.

Murray joins Rob Yanders and player/coach Sterling Davis as the returning trio for the Kelvin Hall side. The 24 year old Scot proved a big player for the Rocks in last season's campaign playing in all 33 games and scoring a season total of 457 points, second only to Yanders.

Davis admits bringing Murray back was critical in keeping the core and experience of the team together.

"Gareth has been here as long as I have so it's always good to have players around that understand what you want and how you want it. I look at Gareth as a teammate of mine as opposed to a player because of our history together. I'm glad we were able to get this done."

A product of the Rocks annual open tryouts, Murray has evolved into a vital player for the Rocks and a highly rated player in the BBL.

"Gareth is a guy who without question has improved year after year both physically and mentally. He is really coming into his own and making a name for himself within the league."

As a homegrown player, originally from Arbroath, Murray is a fantastic role model for the newly formed Glasgow rocks youth teams, proving that the path to the professional game is achievable in Scotland.

"Gareth is also a great model for Scottish youth who have an interest in the game and hope to someday play basketball on a professional level. For them to see one of their own on the floor and producing the way Gareth does is extremely important for mental development of basketball in this country."

The Rocks open tryouts take place tonight, Tuesday 18th August, from 7.30pm at Scotstoun Leisure Centre.
