Zalgiris to lose Maciulis and Kalnietis

Jonas MaciulisFinancial problems at Zalgiris could lead to a departure of two more players. Jonas Maciulis and Mantas Kalnietis could sign contracts with the news teams this week already. Both Maciulis and Kalnietis are playing for free for a couple of months as the club is unable to pay their wages.

Although both players declared their determination to stay in Zalgiris till the end of the season despite not being paid, they got some offers from other teams in Europe that are worth consideration for sure.

Jonas Maciulis is a target of Neven Spahija. Croatian coach is trying to bring the player to Pamesa. According to Spanish media, the only obstacle remaining is the buy-out. It is reported to be around €500.000 but Pamesa is prepared to pay only a half of that.

Alfa.lt reports that Mantas Kalnietis is only a signature away from signing a contract with Benetton Treviso. Zalgiris main point guard could leave the team in the coming days. Italian club was interested in Kalnietis a couple of years ago when he was a surprise in Europe.

If Zalgiris lose these players their chances of winning a domestic title will decrease massively. The club has suffered a historical defeat in the Baltic Basketball League against Kalev 84-57. It seems that the uncertainity about the futue is affecting players' performances on the court.

Pamesa and Banetton both play in Eurocup's Last 16.
