Valentines Day massacre as Tony Garbelotto steps down as Great Britain coach

Tony Garbelotto has stepped down as head coach of Great Britain with immediate effect, the federation announced today.

Garbelotto has also had his contract as the coach of the Scotland national side for the upcoming Commonwealth Games terminated as well as British Basketball League side Glasgow Rocks, citing personal reasons. The latter has not been made official by the club but has been confirmed by a league source.

Alberto Lorenzo, the current GB assistant coach will now act as head coach for the upcoming FIBA World Cup qualification games in February, where they travel to Israel and Greece.

The news has come as a massive shock to the British basketball community, especially as Garbelotto was in good spirits, leading up to this month’s games.

“It is with regret that we have had to terminate Tony’s contract with the Men’s National Team,” said Basketball Scotland chief executive Kevin Pringle as Scotland’s preparation for April’s Commonwealth Games in Australia has taken a severe hit.

“With the Commonwealth Games now fast-approaching, our focus turns to the recruitment of a new Head Coach to give them as much time as possible with the squad before April’s Games.”
