Ergin Ataman confirmed at Anadolu Efes

Anadolu Efes Istanbul has a new man in charge after appointing Coach Ergin Ataman as the new head of bench on Monday.

Ataman, age 51, replaces Velimir Perasovic as head coach on a deal through the end of the 2018-19 season. Efes relieved Perasovic of his duties on Saturday.

Efes sits in last place in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague standings with a 3-9 record. This marks Ataman’s third stint with the club; he previously coached Efes from 1999 to 2001 and from 2008 and 2010. He guided the team to the EuroLeague Final Four in 2000 and to the Turkish League title in 2009. Ataman also led Montepaschi Siena to the 2003 EuroLeague Final Four and the 2002 Saporta Cup crown. For the past five years he coached Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul, which he led to the historic 2016 7DAYS EuroCup crown as well as the Turkish League title in 2013.

Ataman started his coaching career with Turk Telekom Ankara in 1996. He has also coached Fortitudo Bologna in Italy as well as Pinar Karsiyaka, Ulker and Besiktas in his native Turkey, and won the 2012 Euro Challenge with the latter. In addition, Ataman coached the Turkish national team from 2014 to 2016. He has coached in 197 EuroLeague games this century and is set to make a new start with the club in its Round 13 road game at Khimki Moscow Region.
