Serbia’s Stefan Jovic thinking about nothing about qualification and gold in China

Serbia’s Stefan Jovic has been on the losing side at the last three major tournaments that the European powerhouse has competed in and now with the road to the FIBA World Cup beginning on November 24,  the 26-year-old point guard is keen to get going.

Serbia open their qualification campaign with a home game against Austria in Belgrade’s Aleksandar Nikolic Hall. And Sasha Djordjevic and company are back at it in the same arena just three days later against Georgia.

“Right now we’re only thinking about qualifying, that is the most important thing for us, to have the strongest possible squad,” Jovic said to FIBA.com. “And then we want to attack the gold.

“The most important thing is for us to qualify and it doesn’t matter which roster we have. The most important thing is to win the games and to make sure we are at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019,” said Jovic, who was limited in the FIBA EuroBasket 2017 Final against Slovenia after a leg injury he suffered in the Semi-Finals.”

The new qualifiers will also be a chance for Jovic and his teammates to head back home for a few days during the season – something that wasn’t possible previously.

“It’s great to play for the national team and great to play in front of our crowd – also that I can go home and see my friends and family and see my teammates,” said Jovic. “Players always want to play for the national team. It’s a matter of pride.

“I have completely forgotten the final, that is in the past for me.”
