Minnesota Lynx claim WNBA title with 3-2 series win over Los Angeles Sparks

Minnesota Lynx secured their fourth championship in seven years with an 85-76 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks in the deciding game five on Wednesday night.

It was redemption for the the Lynx having lost to the Sparks in last year’s WNBA Finals, that also went the distance. They also trailed 2-1 going into game four and looked out of sorts during their 75-64 loss. However, Minnesota rallied to take the fourth game 80-69 and in-front of a packed Williams Arena, where Lynx guard Lindsay Whalen starred for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers back in the day, it would be a different story.

‘I think every time you do this, it gets a little more special because it gets a little harder,” Whalen said to the Associated Press. ”And more meaningful because you know it’s not easy. It’s not something we try to take for granted ever.”

Sylvia Fowles had 17 points and broke her own WNBA Finals record by grabbing 20 rebounds to lead the Lynx. Maya Moore had a team-high 18 points to go along with 10 rebounds plus a huge runner with 26 seconds to play, that sealed the championships and Whalen herself had 17 points.

Candace Parker had 19 points, 15 rebounds and five assists for the Sparks, who were looking to become the first repeat champions in 15 years but fell just short.
