For the second straight Eurobasket, Croatia’s early second round elimination has brought a change in coach.
With a eye for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers that commence in November, Croatia have announced Ivica Skelin as the new national team head coach, who replaces Aco Petrovic, let go following the side’s Eurobasket elimination to Russia in the round of 16.
The Croatian Federation did this following Eurobasket in 2015 as they were knocked out by Czech Republic and subsequently they let go Vladimir Perasovic.
“First of all, as president of Federation, I would like to give my full support to Dario Šaric. He’s not only a top player, but a top guy, a great professional and he is the pearl and the future of our team,” said Stojko Vranković, President of the Croatian Basketball Association during a press conference.
“I would also like to thank Aleksandar Petrovic. Yesterday we had a conversation that ended very well and now we are in the situation that we had to make a new step.”
Skelin said: “It is an extraordinary honour and pleasure that I have just been chosen for the Croatian selection. Of course I realise what the weight of this role is and I’m clear that there is another bigger obligation in front of me.”
