Shane Larkin and Adam Hanga finalise deals with Barcelona, Baskonia can counter

Former NBA guard Shane Larkin and Hungarian forward Adam Hanga who both starred with Baskonia last season are set to join Catalan giants Barcelona.

Larkin has signed a two-year deal, worth a reported €5.5million, while Hanga, the surprise recipient of the EuroLeague’s Defensive Player of the Year award has inked a three-year contract.

Both documents have been sent to the ACB and Baskonia now has five days to match the contracts or the two will officially be Barca players.

It has been no secret that the two players have been targets for new Barcelona coach Sito Alonso, who coached Baskonia last term and saw both Larkin and Hanga excel under his wing.

Larkin, who spent his first three years in the NBA came to Baskonia last summer from the Brooklyn Nets and since his arrival has become one of the premier guards in the Liga Endesa, as he was included in the league’s All Spanish League Second Team.

The American finished his first season overseas averaging 13.1 points, 5.7 assists and 2.7 rebounds in the EuroLeague where he started in all 33 games.

And it seems that Larkin will be joined in Catalonia by Adam Hanga who continued on from his fine summer leading Hungary to Eurobasket via the qualifiers by helping Baskonia to the EuroLeague Playoffs, averaging 11.9 points a game in the process.

It looked likely that Hanga would test the NBA waters and sign with the San Antonio Spurs, who had kept his rights from the 2011 NBA Draft, where the forward was picked late in the second round. But as the Spurs have recently acquired veteran Rudy Gay, the team would not have had the cap space to sign Hanga.

If the players do finalise their respective deals, it shows a statement of intent by Barcelona, who are still reeling from their nightmare season last term that saw multiple injuries to various stars and as a result, saw them miss out on the EuroLeague Playoffs, as well being dumped out of the Liga Endesa Playoffs at the quarter-final stage.
