There were a series of shock eliminations in the quarter-final qualifiers in the Eurobasket Women with one of those teams exiting the tournament being the holders.

Serbia were ousted 75-70 by one of the surprise packages, Latvia. Veteran Anete Steinberga posted a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds to assist the Latvians.

But despite the win, Latvia lost influential combo guard Elina Babkina to injury early in the contest, and will now be sweating on her fitness for the last eight.

One team tipped to go far in the tournament was Russia, but they were eliminated by Greece.

A monumental 18 points and 21 rebounds from Maria Vadeeva was not enough to save Russia as Greece were fueled by 24 points and 9 boards from Styliani Kaltsidou who came up big in the clutch to lift the Greeks to a narrow 62-58 win.

Meanwhile Slovak Republic legend Zuzana Zirkova exploded for 31 points as they stunned fancied Ukraine 82-68.

However, there was no sweep of shocks as Italy survived mass Hungarian pressure to record a 49-48 win.

The Italian defence made a big difference, while Cecilia Zandalasini continued her outstanding first Eurobasket Women tournament to send her side to the next phase in Prague.

She finished with yet another standout performance as she amassed 17 points and nine rebounds.
