Slovenian champions jumps ship from EuroCup to Basketball Champions League

After a 20-year association with EuroLeague Basketball, Slovenian powerhouse Union Olimpija Ljubljana has decided to join FIBA’s Basketball Champions League next season.

Union Olimpija captured the Slovenian league title last season and they join fellow league champions Stelmet Zielona Gora of Poland and CEZ Nymburk of the Czech Republic as well as teams from Italy, Turkey and the reigning champions Tenerife in the competition next season.

The Slovenian side have competed in the EuroLeague since 1996 and since the 2013-14 season, have been in the EuroCup, but since capturing the domestic crown, Union Olimpija decided to try a different route for the new season which starts in September.

“I’m delighted to welcome Olimpija Ljubljana in the Basketball Champions League,” said Basketball Champions League CEO Patrick Comninos.

“As recent Slovenian champion, they have to be congratulated for wining their domestic title. I am convinced that a club with such notable history and achievements will bring something special to next year’s competition, and I hope this will be a unique experience for their fans.”

Union Olimpija are one of the most storied franchises in Slovenia with a remarkable list of trophies. FIBA Saporta Cup winner in 1994, they have secured 22 national championship titles, 20 Slovenian Cups as well as the first edition of the Adriatic League in 2002.
