Tony Garbelotto pens two-year deal with Glasgow Rocks

Glasgow Rocks have signalled their intent for next season by appointing Tony Garbelotto as the club’s new head coach, on an initial two-year deal.

Garbelotto joins the Rocks with a wealth of experience across all levels of the game and an eagerness to do what it takes to propel the club to the next level.

“I am very pleased to be named the new Glasgow Rocks Head Coach,” confirmed the play-caller.

“This franchise and club has long been considered one of the top clubs in the UK and I am excited about the possibility of bringing success to the club, Glasgow and Scotland.

“I hope that I can not only make an impact on the court by ultimately winning silverware, but also make an impact in the community and leave an ongoing legacy for basketball in Scotland.”

Garbelotto began his coaching career in 1993 with the London Towers and went on to coach in Iceland, Germany and more recently Vietnam, where he was named head coach of the national team.

He was Assistant coach to the Great Britain Olympic Men’s Team and has also served time as the England men’s team Head Coach. As impressive and illustrious as his coaching career has been, it was his BBL accolades, which include five pieces of silverware with the Everton/Mersey Tigers that sealed the deal.

Glasgow Rocks’ Co-Owner, Duncan Smillie added: “We are delighted that Tony is our new head coach, his record in basketball is first class and his BBL CV speaks for itself.

Tony Garbelotto win the BBL title with the now defunct Mersey Tigers in 2011.

“We had around 100 applications for the role and went through a stringent process of selection which included interviews and on-court sessions.

“Tony was the clear choice from what was a great shortlist and I look forward to welcoming Tony to the Rocks and to the city. The work starts now on recruitment and building for next season. The Rocks have a new coach, so let’s get behind him.”

Garbelotto’s task will be to build on the strong foundations that have been established at the Rocks and improve on the third-place finish last season in the British Basketball League as well as reaffirming the Rocks as one of the top clubs in the UK.
