British Basketball League 2016-17 round up (week 25)

Leicester Riders were crowned BBL Trophy champions for the second year running after turning on the style at the Emirates Arena.

Rob Paternostro’s side made a strong start and never looked back as they defeated Plymouth Raiders 91-58 for a record-breaking margin.

Taylor King snapped up MVP honours as he poured in 20 points to go with 10 rebounds for a fine double-double, while three other players reached double figures.

“We had the two weeks to prepare and we needed that as we were not 100% healthy coming in,” said Rob Paternostro.

“I could see that the guys were eager to play and we did a great job.

“We set the tone early with some great plays at both ends and I thought the bench was excellent today.

“I’m proud to coach this team – they gave it everything they have got.”

Meanwhile, in league action, DBL Sharks Sheffield snapped a 12-game losing streak against Esh Group Eagles Newcastle with a 95-84 victory for their first win since 2014.

Malcolm Riley led the way with 29 points as the Sharks made a blistering start to the fourth to take control and run away to the win.

Elsewhere, it was a disappointing double-header for Leeds Force as they suffered two losses on the weekend.

Matt Newby’s side were beaten 80-99 at home to Worcester Wolves on Friday night before falling to an 87-80 defeat at Surrey Scorchers the next day.

Chaz Rollins and Tayo Ogedengbe combined for 47 points in the win as the Scorchers returned to the top eight.
