Barca edges Darussafaka Dogus to end 2016, EuroLeague Friday round up

Barcelona brought 2016 to an end as they rallied to beat Darussafaka Dogus 81-77 at the Palau Blaugrana on Friday.

Ante Tomic led the winners with 16 points with Tyrese Rice and Sasha Vezenkov each adding 13 as Barcelona improved its record to 7-8 while Darussafaka dropped to 8-7.

“It’s a good win to finish the year, winning in front of this crowd,” said Tomic. “It was also a very important win for us, because of our situation in the EuroLeague this year. So every win is important, and this win we needed to give us the impulse to keep going and to keep winning.”

James Anderson led all scorers for Darussafaka with 21 as they controlled the game in the first half but came apart in the third quarter, leaving Barcelona open to hit back and ultimately secure the win.

Unics Kazan came back from 14-points down to beat Panathinaikos 83-81 at the Basket Hall as the Greeks subpar away form this season continues to be noticed.

Cory Higgins had the opportunity to win it for the visitors but his shot was way short as Unics finish the first half of the EuroLeague season with a 6-9 record having won three straight.

Keith Langford led Kazan with a sublime 27 points but he had a fantastic supporting cast. Latavious Williams was a force inside with 19 points and nine rebounds, including two key baskets in the final three minutes of the game with Quino Colom adding 16 for the winners

“There are a lot of reasons for this win – Latavious Williams, Quino Colom and myself,” Langford explained. “I picked it up in the third quarter. I wanted to come out and be much more aggressive. We started the quarter with 5-0 in fouls and those were legitimate fouls. I tried to be really aggressive. They threw a lot of defenders at me, but I took it upon myself to really try to attack in the third quarter.”

Brose Bamberg ended the year in spectacular fashion as they thrashed Galatasaray 90-75 in Istanbul to continue their rise up the table and make sure that their Turkish counterparts stay rooted to the bottom.

Daniel Theis was the star performer with a big double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds for Bamberg as they improve to 6-9, including four wins for their last five. Janis Strelnieks had five triples among his team-high 18 points.

Austin Daye paced Galatasaray with 20 points as they drop to 4-11.
