Brose Baskets storms to third EuroLeague win in Tel Aviv

Brose Baskets claimed their third win of the EuroLeague season by convincingly overcoming Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv on the road 85-70 on Wednesday night.

Italian Nicolo Melli hit six three-pointers as he went for 27 points and 14 rebounds, helping the German side to a 3-8 record.

Darius Miller added 12 points for the winners.

Renowned so far for failing to play in the clutch, Bamberg emphatically changed that by racing away in the first two quarters before keeping their double-digit lead heading into the fourth period.

Led by Sonny Weems, Maccabi looked to pose a challenge to what looked to be a crumbling Bamberg defensive line as the former CSKA Moscow forward reduced the deficit to single digits at but the German visitors weathered the Israeli storm and finished strong to drop Maccabi to 5-6.

“It’s amazing really,” said an ecstatic Melli.

“We deserve it, really. We came here. We played with personality. We were coming, honestly, from a tough moment, because we were playing good, making mistakes, stupid ones sometimes, and always losing by one, two, three points.

“Only in Kaunas, where we didn’t play well, did we lose by much. So it’s tough when you lose like this almost every time. You know you are playing good but the result is not coming. Today I think we did an incredible job and really I am happy for everybody, from the management to the young guys who practice with up. We deserved it.”

Bamberg coach Andrea Trincheri paid tribute to his team’s character. They were coming off five straight defeats and team morale needed a swift boost. Their first road win of the season goes a long way, he says.

“I believe that we put together a very smart game,” he commented. “We were very efficient. We came from behind here after five very painful losses. But when you have a team, these things can happen. I have a team. They played as a team.

“Everybody was really, really important. Easy to Nicolo put together an amazing game. But everybody, even if they played one minute, gave us something. So we came here as a team and we go home with a team win.”

Andrew Goudelock had 20 points, Sonny Weems 16 and Colton Iverson 10 for Maccabi.
