EuroLeague preview: Four-game Tuesday highlighted by an all-Spanish clash

Real Madrid face off against Baskonia in the Spanish capital on Tuesday as round three of the EuroLeague begins with sixteen games being played over three nights.

In another exciting new twist to the new EuroLeague season, the games are getting more and more frequent and a blockbuster encounter between two Liga Endesa giants is a perfect sign of things to come. Real Madrid are currently 5-0, domestically with Baskonia keeping up at 4-1.

It’s the same story in the EuroLeague as well, with Real 2-0 and Baskonia 1-1 having lost their latest game at Zalgiris.

“We will be facing a great team with lots of quality, who went to the Final Four last year and which features great players,” said Real Madrid coach Pablo Laso. “We will have to do a great job in defence to stop them.”

“The season is long and we must take advantage of the fact that we play against another great opponent to grow as a team,” added Madrid forward Anthony Randolph, who faced Baskonia at last season’s Final Four as part of Lokomotiv Kuban.

“We have to work hard to win the game: control the rebounds, play good defence and lay the transitions well.

For Baskonia, who won at the weekend against Joventut Badalona, they are looking to bounce back from their loss in Lithuania and maintain their performance levels that they displayed in Catalonia on Sunday.

“Of course, we are going to Madrid to play a tough game,” says Baskonia coach Sito Alonso. “They are performing great, especially the new players. I think the usual players in Madrid are helping the newcomers to play better, and we’ll have to play a good game.”

EuroLeague champions CSKA Moscow travel to the Abdi Ipecki Arena in Istanbul for the second time in two weeks on Tuesday as they look to continue their winning start against Anadolu Efes, who are looking to get off the mark at the third time of askingafter two losses.

CSKA thumped Galatasaray on match night one 109-84 and are hoping for more of the same, Tuesday.

However, Anadolu Efes are certainly a better team than what their current 0-2 record suggests and the Muscovites are under no illusion about the side they will face.

“The game in Istanbul will be another tough test for us playing in the new EuroLeague system with the games so close to each other in the schedule,” CSKA forward Kyle Hines said.

“Efes is good and experienced team, they have creative guards and athletic forwards who play very aggressively within system. We have to match their speed, intensity and athleticism to come out with victory.”
