Vice President JD Vance has criticized WNBA players for walking out during the national anthem, arguing that such actions show disrespect toward the United States.
Vance expressed strong disapproval of the protest, suggesting that professional athletes should recognize the opportunities and privileges they enjoy rather than use the national anthem to express political disagreements.
“I think it’s disgraceful.”
The vice president pointed to the financial opportunities, careers and security available to WNBA players, arguing that they have significant reasons to appreciate their country.
“Those women who play for the WNBA, think of the public safety, think of the incredible wealth and privilege, the amazing jobs that they have!”
Vance also drew a distinction between criticizing government policies or elected officials and protesting in a way that he believes disrespects the country as a whole.
“I think that you should not express some criticism of a public policy of a given politician by disrespecting the country writ large!”
He concluded by arguing that greater appreciation for the United States would benefit the players personally and reduce the criticism directed toward them.
“They have a lot to be grateful to the United States for. And I think that if they had a bit more of a spirit of gratitude, they’d be happier people and they wouldn’t offend so many people as well.”
