San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox has revealed that he, Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle discussed the possibility of playing together in the starting lineup during a summer visit to Victor Wembanyama in France.
The conversation came before head coach Mitch Johnson tested the three-guard combination in Wednesday’s 123-103 preseason victory over the Phoenix Suns.
Wembanyama also supported the idea of having multiple ball handlers on the court, explaining that their presence could make his responsibilities easier.
The experiment provided an early opportunity for San Antonio to assess how its guards could complement one another despite their individual preferences for playing with the basketball.
Fox made his preseason debut against Phoenix, playing 18 minutes and 33 seconds, all in the first half.
Castle finished with 18 points, including 14 from the free-throw line, while Harper added nine points.
The three guards helped San Antonio take an 11-point halftime lead, offering encouraging signs after limited success together last season.
Fox’s role will be particularly important as the Spurs continue developing their backcourt. The veteran guard signed a four-year, $229 million contract extension with San Antonio in 2025.
Meanwhile, Castle will become eligible for a contract extension during the 2027 offseason.
