Dillon Brooks has embraced his reputation as one of the NBA’s most polarizing players, explaining how the villain label fuels his motivation and helps him approach every game with a competitive edge.
“I consider myself a villain. For me, it just keeps motivation for every game,” Brooks said. “I feel like being a villain is taking on the challenge that no one else will.”
The Phoenix Suns forward believes his role goes beyond simply antagonizing opponents. Brooks views the perception of a villain as an opportunity to challenge the traditional narrative surrounding NBA stars.
“Obviously in stories they always fail cause the hero always wins, but I feel like I’m writing and telling a new story,” he added.
Brooks has built his reputation through aggressive defense, physical play and a willingness to challenge some of the league’s biggest names. Rather than distancing himself from the criticism that comes with that approach, he has turned it into part of his identity.
The 30-year-old is more than a defensive agitator. He is coming off the most productive scoring season of his NBA career, averaging 20.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 56 games for Phoenix during the 2025-26 regular season.
Brooks shot 43.5% from the field and 34.4% from three-point range while averaging 30.4 minutes per game. His scoring represented a significant increase from the 14.0 points per game he recorded in 75 appearances for the Houston Rockets in 2024-25.

He earned a place on the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 2022-23, demonstrating that his reputation was supported by his defensive contributions.
Across nine NBA seasons, Brooks has averaged 14.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.
Phoenix has made Brooks an important part of its plans after agreeing to a three-year, $73 million contract extension on August 6, keeping him under contract through 2030.
