Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry says he is comfortable with his financial situation after accepting approximately $20 million less on his latest contract extension.

Curry recently signed a two-year, $116 million extension with Golden State, adding to a series of contracts that have made him one of the highest-paid players in NBA history.

The veteran guard has signed six NBA contracts, beginning with his four-year, $12.7 million rookie deal. Including his remaining salary commitments, his career earnings from NBA contracts are projected to reach approximately $650 million.

Reflecting on the financial side of professional basketball, Curry acknowledged how dramatically salaries and franchise valuations have increased during his career.

“Sometimes I realize this is not a real, real place, the NBA. The gratitude and understanding, the numbers we’re talking about. Team valuations and the salary cap, max numbers and all that. It goes back to my very first contract, the 4 [year] for $44 [million] that I signed.”

Curry explained that his contract decisions involve discussions with his family and consideration of his long-term priorities, rather than simply pursuing the highest possible salary.

“You sign a contract based on information that you have and what you feel like is right. Ayesha, my family, everybody’s on the same page of understanding what I have in front of me and the controllables of playing good basketball, staying with the Golden State Warriors and trying to end this thing the right way.”
