Serbia, Turkey amongst high risers in FIBA Women’s rankings

It was an Olympic Games debut to remember for Serbia as their remarkable bronze medal finish shoots them up five places into ninth in the new FIBA world rankings for women.

It marks the first time as an independent nation that Serbia have made the top ten in the women’s rankings. They overcame a dreadful start, losing their first three games in Rio to beating Australia and France, en route to the bronze medal.

Turkey rose three places from tenth to seventh in the updated rankings following a solid Rio 2016 campaign where they reached the quarter-finals.

Other European nations that will be smiling following the release of the new rankings are going to be Spain and France as they both knocked Australia down from second to fourth following the Opals shock quarter-final exit to Serbia where Spain secured the silver medal and despite France narrowly missing out on a podium finish, they regularly compete for international titles.

Spain move up to second with France third.

Outside of the top ten, Croatia, Greece and Great Britain all moved up a spot to 19th, 20th and 21st, respectively. But plummeting down the rankings goes former European women’s powerhouse Russia, as they drop five places to 11th and it’s even worse for Latvia, as they fall ten places all the way down to 27th.

As expected, the USA comfortably sit on top of the world rankings.
