Klay Thompson is expected to continue his career with the Miami Heat once he clears waivers following a buyout agreement with the Dallas Mavericks, according to ESPN.

Thompson and Dallas worked out an exit from the final year of his contract, which carried a $17.5 million salary.

The four-time NBA champion had informed the Mavericks that he wanted an opportunity to join a championship contender.

Miami quickly emerged as his likely destination. The Heat had identified Thompson as their leading free-agent target and remained patient for nearly two months while waiting for his situation in Dallas to be resolved.

Adding one of the most accomplished three-point shooters in NBA history would give Miami another veteran weapon alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo as the Heat strengthen their roster for a title run.
